Picture the people who design the bridges you cross, the water systems you rely on and the staircases that connect hillside neighborhoods to the city below. For a long time, the image most people had of those engineers didn't include many women. That is changing, but slowly, and women in civil engineering are helping redefine what the profession looks like.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, as cited by the American Society of Civil Engineers, women make up only 17% of civil engineers in the United States. They are still a minority, yet their perspectives shape infrastructure that serves everyone.
In this article, you will learn why representation matters, what challenges women in the field still describe, and practical steps high school and college students can take to start their own path in civil engineering.
Why women in civil engineering matter
Infrastructure serves everyone
Roads, water systems, homes and public spaces are used by people of every gender, age and ability. Design teams that reflect that diversity are better placed to notice needs that might otherwise be missed, such as safe lighting, accessible paths or how caregivers move through a neighborhood with children.
Housing and access affect women differently
When infrastructure is missing, the daily effort of reaching water, schools and clinics doesn't fall on everyone equally. Our article on affordable housing and gender equality explores how safe homes and services affect women and families.
Role models open doors
Seeing women lead projects, solve technical problems and manage teams helps younger students picture themselves in the same roles. Mentors also share practical knowledge that isn't in any textbook: how to speak up in a design review, how to handle a skeptical crew on site and how to choose a specialty that fits your interests.
Challenges women in civil engineering still face
ASCE reports that women are more visible in civil engineering than before, but gender-based challenges persist. Common themes include:
- Being the only woman in the room on a team, at a site or in a class
- Fewer visible mentors at senior levels
- Assumptions about field work, especially on construction sites
- Balancing career growth with responsibilities outside work
Naming these challenges early helps students look for programs, employers and mentors who actively support women in the field. It also helps to remember that these are challenges in the profession, not limits on what you can do in it.
How students can start a path in civil engineering
In high school
- Take the most challenging math and physics courses available
- Join STEM clubs, robotics teams or design challenges
- Look for engineering summer programs or job shadowing
- Talk to women engineers about their work and how they got there
In college
- Join student chapters of professional organizations and women-in-engineering groups
- Seek internships and research opportunities early
- Build a portfolio of projects, including field experience
- Find mentors, both peers and professionals
Get hands-on field experience
Field work builds confidence in exactly the places where women are sometimes underestimated. Working on a real site teaches you to read terrain, use tools, communicate with crews and solve problems in real time. If you're new to this kind of work, learn how to join construction volunteer opportunities abroad and what to look for in a program.
Building field experience with Safe Homes Movement
On the development service learning trip with Safe Homes Movement, powered by MEDLIFE, students join community infrastructure projects in Lima, Cusco and Tena. Local architects and engineers lead design and supervise construction, and students work alongside residents on projects like staircases, retaining walls, greenhouses and home construction.
Every participant does hands-on work, from mixing cement to laying bricks and installing handrails, under professional guidance. For many students, it's the first time they've seen civil engineering outside a classroom, and the first time they've done the work themselves. Field experience like this can also help you understand what construction jobs involve before you apply.
